The Pieces, Their Movements, and Values

As mentioned earlier in the book, the modern game of chess has six types of pieces, each of them with different abilities, movements, and values. These attributes are listed below, beginning with the least valuable pawn.

The Pawn

In chess, there are eight pawns on the chessboard, making it the most numerous piece on the board. It is also the weakest and it generally given a value of 1. It was historically used to symbolize either the infantry, armed peasants or pikemen. Each player starts the game with the pawns arranged on the second rank or row of the chessboard.

The pawns are named according to their position on the board. For instance, the two pawns at the edges of the board are called the rook pawns and are on the same file or column as the rook.

The pawn can only move forward to the square directly in front of its self if that square is free. Any pawn on the starting rank has the option of moving one or two steps forward though it may not use these two steps to jump over another piece. The pawn unique on the board because unlike all the other pieces, it cannot move backward.
